Sign Refurbishment

Old signs do not always need a full replacement. We refurbish shopfronts, vehicle graphics, panels and display units with new faces, vinyls, repairs and fresh finishes so the sign looks current again.

When a Sign Needs Refurbishment

A sign starts to show its age in small ways first. Colours fade in the Free State sun, vinyl lifts on corners, acrylic faces crack, and powder coated frames pick up rust spots after winter rain and summer heat. In Bloemfontein we also see dust, wind and load-shedding related wear on illuminated signs where cabling or fittings need attention. If the structure is still sound, refurbishment is often the better option than starting from scratch.

We handle refurb work for shop signs, wall signs, window graphics, door panels, floor graphics, vehicle markings and exhibition displays. The goal is to bring the sign back to a clean, readable condition while keeping the existing frame or base where possible. That usually saves time and money, and it helps keep trading interruption to a minimum.

  • Faded faces and lettering
  • Cracked panels or loose mountings
  • Peeling vinyl or damaged laminates
  • Outdated branding after a name, phone or layout change
  • Rust, dirt or surface damage on frames and brackets

What We Replace, Repair or Refresh

Every job starts with a proper site check or workshop inspection. We look at the sign structure, the fixing points, the face material, illumination, access and the condition of any printed graphics. Where the base is still good, we can replace only the worn parts instead of removing the full sign. That includes new acrylic faces, new aluminium or composite panels, fresh vinyl lettering, reprinted decals and updated finishes on exposed surfaces.

For vehicle graphics, we remove damaged sections, clean adhesive residue and replace the affected panels or stickers so the vehicle looks neat again. For shopfronts and interior signs we can match existing colours, redo cut vinyl, add a protective laminate or resurface the panel for a cleaner appearance. On older illuminated signs we inspect lamps, wiring and holders if the unit uses replaceable lighting components, then close up the sign with new faces and seals.

  • Panel replacement in acrylic, aluminium or composite board
  • Cut vinyl removal and reapplication
  • Printed graphic refresh with UV resistant laminate
  • Frame cleaning, prep and repainting where suitable
  • Seal checks on exterior signs exposed to rain and dust

How the Refurbishment Process Works

Our process is practical and straightforward. Lerato and Annelie usually start by arranging the inspection, gathering the details and confirming what needs to stay and what needs to change. Zanele then checks artwork or redraws the logo if the old files are poor quality, while Thabo and Johan assess the fabrication and installation side. Kagiso handles vehicle related work where graphics need careful removal and reapplication.

Once the scope is agreed, we move into production. Old materials are stripped off, the surfaces are cleaned, new components are cut or printed, and the sign is rebuilt or reinstalled. If access is awkward or the site is busy, we plan the work around trading hours so the business is not blocked longer than necessary.

  • Site survey and condition check
  • Artwork setup, logo redraws or artwork correction
  • Removal of damaged graphics or old faces
  • Fabrication, print production or vinyl cutting
  • Installation, final cleaning and sign-off

Turnaround Times for Bloemfontein and Surrounds

Turnaround depends on the size of the sign, the condition of the frame and whether new print or fabrication is needed. A small decal refresh or panel swap can be completed quickly, while larger shopfront refurbishments, vehicle sets or multi-site updates take longer. We work across Bloemfontein, Mangaung, Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu, Welkom and Kroonstad, so timing also depends on travel and site access. If a sign can be refurbished on site, we often complete the work faster than a full removal and rebuild.

For planning, most minor refurbishments can move from assessment to completion in a few working days once artwork is approved. Larger jobs with custom panels, printed graphics or structural repairs may take a little longer, especially if there are weather delays or the site needs after-hours access. If the sign is part of a trading centre with municipal rules or landlord approvals, we factor that in from the start so there are no last minute hold-ups.

Pricing: What Affects the Cost

Refurbishment pricing is based on the actual condition of the sign, not a one-size quote. A clean sign face with faded vinyl is far cheaper to update than a rusted frame with broken fixings. We price the work according to materials, labour, access, artwork changes, installation time and whether the sign needs repair before new graphics go on. That way you only pay for what needs attention.

We are careful with existing assets because refurbishing a sign should make business sense. If the structure is sound and the branding change is simple, refurbishment usually gives good value. If the frame is unsafe or the material has reached the end of its life, we will say so upfront rather than patching over a problem. You get a clear scope, fair pricing and no guesswork.

  • Extent of damage or wear
  • Size and type of sign
  • Material choice for replacement parts
  • Printing, cutting or fabrication time
  • Access equipment and installation conditions

Keeping Refurbished Signs Looking Good

Once a sign has been refreshed, a bit of planned maintenance keeps it looking tidy for longer. In Bloemfontein’s dry dust and strong sun, exterior signs benefit from periodic cleaning and a quick check on seals, fasteners and vinyl edges. Coastal humidity is not the issue here, but weather changes, wind and dust can still shorten the life of finishes if they are left unchecked. Minor issues are easier to sort before they turn into larger repairs.

We recommend a maintenance visit every 6 to 12 months for exposed shopfront signs, vehicle graphics and any sign with lighting or moving parts. Busy sites, high-traffic retail fronts and signs close to roads may need attention sooner. During a visit we can clean the surface, inspect the fixings, replace loose stickers, touch up worn areas and flag any parts that should be renewed before they fail.

  • 6 months for high traffic or sun-exposed signs
  • 12 months for sheltered signs in good condition
  • After heavy wind, vandalism or impact damage
  • Before a rebrand, tenancy change or new promotion

Signs We Refurbish Most Often

Our team works on a wide range of signs across the Free State, from small storefront updates to larger branded displays. Central Signs is based in Hamilton, Bloemfontein and we regularly refurbish signs for offices, retail units, workshops, schools, churches and trade counters. The common thread is simple: the structure is still useful, but the face of the sign needs attention.

If your sign is old but still worth saving, we can usually assess it quickly and advise on the best route forward. Marius and the team keep the process practical, with a focus on getting the sign back into good shape without unnecessary replacements or delays.

  • Shopfront signs and fascia panels
  • Window vinyls, door graphics and floor decals
  • Vehicle branding and fleet panels
  • Wayfinding signs and directory boards
  • Exhibition displays, banners and interior feature signs

Questions we get asked

Can you refurbish a sign without replacing the whole frame?

Yes. If the frame, mountings and structure are still sound, we can replace the faces, graphics or finishes only. That is often the most cost-effective option.

What if the old logo file is poor quality?

We can redraw the logo and set up the artwork again for print or vinyl cutting. If the branding has changed, we can update the layout as part of the refurbishment.

Do you offer maintenance after the sign is refurbished?

Yes. We can schedule routine maintenance visits to clean, inspect and tighten signs, and to deal with worn vinyl or damaged parts before they become a bigger problem.
